When I saw the trailer for Hot Rod, I had no interest in it whatsoever. I kind of liked Andy Samberg from his “Lazy Sunday” digital short on SNL, but seeing him in a movie didn’t seem appealing. Especially one that seemed to rely only on physical comedy.
Hot Rod is another ridiculous comedy (and I say that affectionately) from Lorne Micheals. The movie is like a cross between Napoleon Dynamite and any Lorne Micheals movie such as Billy Madison, Tommy Boy or Wayne’s World. Every character is ridiculously idiotic and provides consistent laughs. If you are familiar with the laughable era of 80’s hair bands, the soundtrack to Hot Rod alone will keep you laughing.
The movie follows the path of a wannabe stuntman who has to find a way to raise money for his step-father’s heart transplant. It’s pretty much another version of Dirty Work. It’s another movie that’s not exactly critically acclaimed but becomes a fan favorite over time.
