Of all professional sports, the NFL is probably the worst when it comes to providing fans with options to stream games online. The main reason for this is because of DirecTV’s exclusive deal with the NFL for rights to the games. This leaves very few options for cable cutters. There are a handful of ways to watch NFL games online though. Some of them are illegal, but I’m not going to cover that stuff that in this post since most of them require you to install a player nobody should trust. Here are a few legal options you can use for enjoying the NFL over the Net.
DirecTV Sunday Ticket Maxx
DirecTV offers a basic Sunday Ticket package to their satellite customers that only allows you to watch games on a TV attached to a DirecTV satellite box. They offer an additional Sunday Ticket Maxx package that allows you to watch NFL games from your computer, phone, or tablet. You have to be a subscriber to the DirecTV satellite service for this option.
PlayStation 3 + Sunday Ticket
If you own a PlayStation 3, you can purchase the NFL Sunday Ticket channel for PS3 and stream games live to your TV. A DirecTV satellite subscription is not required for this option, though DirecTV subscribers can obtain this option for a lower price. The channel costs $399 for a full season for non DirecTV subscribers, and is lowered to $149.95 after the halfway point in the NFL season. You do not get Monday Night, Thursday Night, Saturday Night, or Sunday Night games with this option. Locally televised games are also blacked out. This option is no longer available. It was removed at the 2013 season.
Verizon offers an NFL Mobile app that allows streaming live Thursday Night, Monday Night and Sunday Night NFL games to your Verizon phone or tablet. Verizon is currently working on a deal to carry more games. Subscribers also get live radio broadcasts for all NFL games and access to the NFL Network and Redzone channels. NFL Mobile Premium costs $5 per month for Verizon subscribers.
One thing to note is that you cannot use an HDMI or MHL connection from your phone to your TV to view the games. Believe me, I’ve tried! The app detects the connection to another device and locks it down.
NFL Game Access
The NFL offers 3 packages for Game Access. The Game Rewind package allows fans to watch games after they have aired. There are 3 tiers to the Game Rewind package. Follow Your Team, Season and Season Plus. Game Rewind does not provide viewing of live games. You can however watch live pre-season games with the Pre-Season Live package for $19.99. If you would like access to live radio broadcasts, the Audio Pass provides audio coverage of all games.
Well, those are your options when it comes to streaming NFL games over the Internet. Which option do you use? Share your experience in the comments section.
