6 Universal Remote Controls That Work with Roku

I was using 3 separate remote controls for my TV, Blu-ray player, and Roku Premier box, I decided to find a universal remote that could handle all three devices. I wasn’t looking for anything flashy. The Roku is a simple device, so I wanted a simple remote that worked with the device but didn’t cost too much money. Whether you have lost your Roku remote and need a replacement, or just want something to use across multiple devices, here are 6 great Roku universal remote control solutions.

Option #1 – RCA RCR313BR

rca remote

Works with: Roku 1, 2, 3, 4, Ultra, Express, Premier, and most Roku branded TVs.

This is the remote I chose personally for myself. The RCA RCR313BR 3-Device Universal Remote works great with my Roku Premier. At under $12, the remote is cheaper than purchasing the original remote control from Roku.com and has all Roku button functionality.

Using the code booklet to program this remote was a breeze. The illuminated buttons make for convenient usage even in the darkest living rooms.

For me, the RCA RCR313BR is the best universal remote to use with Roku.

The Roku Code is 52371 or 53061.

Option #2 – RCA RCR6473E

Works with: Roku 1, 2, 3, 4, Ultra, Express, Premier, and most Roku branded TVs.

If a 3-device remote doesn’t work for you, The RCA RCR6473E remote is only $4 more, supports up to 6 devices, and works with the Roku as well. At first, I was a bit disappointed with the Sony remote because I couldn’t figure out which button took you back to the previous menu. After some research, I found the “Up” button on the remote functions as “Back” in most apps. However, the remote is missing an asterisk/star (*) button. Personally, I am getting by fine without it as there are often other ways to reach any menu that requires pressing that button. If you really need the asterisk, you can use the Roku mobile app.

Roku Codes for the RCR6473E are 52371 and 53061

Option #3 – Third Party Replacement

Works with: Roku 1, 2, 3, 4, Ultra, Express, Premier, and most Roku branded TVs.

If you’re not a fan of a universal remote for your Roku and want a cheap solution, there is a third-party Roku remote made by Hztprm. This is a very viable Roku replacement remote, as it looks and feels just like the true Roku remote for a fraction of the price. It also has power, channel, and volume controls that work with a plethora of televisions.

Option #4 – SofaBaton X1

Sofabaton X1

Works with: All Roku Models

Sofabaton has seemed to take over the area of remotes that can do anything since Logitech discontinued their Harmony line. The X1 is a step up from Sofabaton’s predecessor the U1. I personally own this remote and have yet to find a remote-controlled device it doesn’t work with. It can control virtually any device via Bluetooth, infrared, or Wi-Fi including the Roku Streaming Stick.

The product release for the X1 was a bit spotty as it had some kinks to work out. If you install the latest firmware though, things run smoothly.

Option #5 – SofaBaton U1

SofaBaton U1

Works with: Roku 1, 2, 3, 4, Ultra, Express, Premier, and most Roku branded TVs.

Since Logitech bowed out of to remote control game, Sofabaton created the U1 model, a solid alternative to the Logitech Harmony line of remotes. The U1 is easy to program and it’s difficult to find a device it won’t work with. It does not work with the Roku Streaming Stick, which is a disappointment.

Option #6 – Logitech Harmony Express

Logitech Harmony Remote

Works with: All Roku Models

If you want to use a universal remote with your Roku Streaming Stick, there aren’t many options out there other than the SofaBaton X1. Though this option is a bit pricey, and it has been discontinued by the manufacturer, the Logitech Harmony Express is a solid performing universal remote that will work with the Roku Streaming Stick as well as all other Roku models. The remote can be customized and programmed to work with virtually any device.

The Logitech Harmony Elite is a cousin of the Logitech Express and will also work just as well, with the addition of supporting voice commands with the Roku.

The only issue you may have with this option is that Logitech has discontinued their line of Harmony remotes. However, they still update the guides and software.

For me, option 1 provides a wonderful solution for my Roku Ultra. I’m down to one remote in each room and loving it! For the room with my Roku Streaming Stick and home theater system, I am using the Sofabaton X1.

Does one of these Roku universal remote solutions work for you? Do you have a different suggestion? I’d love to hear about it in the comments section.

FAQ

Will any of these universal remotes work with the TCL Roku TV versions?

Yes, they will. If you’re looking for functionality for changing the channels on the TCL TV, you will need to program the remote to work with TCL TVs under one mode, then program the Roku separately under a different button mode. Treat them like separate devices. The TCL TV side, and the Roku side.

  1. RE RCA RCR313BR: I have a rcr314we/313be and the go back option does not work. Does the 313br have that option and which button is it? go back ex: I am watching a program and want to go back to the channel lineup area to choose another channel.
    Thanks
